The Middlesex County Family Courthouse at 120 New Street is where all family court cases are filed and heard. New Brunswick is the only location for family court in Middlesex County. The courthouse handles thousands of cases each year from all 25 municipalities in the county.

The courthouse is in downtown New Brunswick, near the NJ Transit train station. Bus and rail service make it easy to reach without a car. Security screens all visitors at the entrance. Bring a valid photo ID.

Family Court Records and Judges

The Middlesex County Family Division has several judges who hear cases in New Brunswick. The Presiding Judge of the Family Part is Hon. Daniel Brown, who sits in Courtroom 101. The free case search tool at njcourts.gov lets you look up basic case data. Enter a party name or docket number to find filing dates, case status, and judge assignments. This works for all New Brunswick family court records.

For full copies of documents, you need the Records Request Form (CN 10200). Download it from the Superior Court Clerk's Office page. Divorce documents go only to parties or their attorneys. Others need a court order. The form asks for a docket number. If you do not know yours, call the Customer Service Unit at 609-421-6100.

New Brunswick residents have the benefit of living in the same city as the courthouse. You can walk in during business hours to search records, file papers, or get copies on the same day.

The city also runs a municipal court at 25 Kirkpatrick Street. The municipal court phone is 732-745-5089. Hours are 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. This court handles traffic tickets and local violations. It does not handle family court cases.

The New Brunswick Municipal Court now conducts both in-person and virtual proceedings via Zoom. Virtual sessions run Monday through Thursday. The Chief Municipal Court Judge is James P. Hoebich. For family matters, go to the Family Courthouse at 120 New Street instead.

Types of Family Records in New Brunswick

The Family Division handles the full range of cases. Divorce is the most common. The court also handles child custody, parenting time, and child support. New Brunswick is where all Middlesex County domestic violence cases are filed. The court processes juvenile matters, guardianship, adoption, and paternity cases too.

Divorce records include the complaint, settlement agreements, and the final judgment of divorce. Custody orders and parenting plans are part of the file. Child support is tracked through the Probation Division at 732-645-4300 ext. 88585. Domestic violence records are sealed under N.J.S.A. 2C:25-33. Juvenile and adoption records are also confidential by law.

Under Rule 1:38, 30 of the 38 exceptions to public access involve family and criminal matters. This reflects how sensitive these records are.
